The Question of the Day: How Do I Know If I’m An Alcoholic?

If you have to ask …

That is such a quicksandy sort of question. What I mean is this – maybe you are and maybe you aren’t an alcoholic. Maybe you can learn to drink moderately and maybe it’s too late. Maybe you’re already good at having honest internal discussions with yourself or maybe you’re a good liar and even you believe your shit.

If you think you might have a problem with alcohol, the only way to stop giving it so much power is to stop making it such a priority in your life.

How many times during the day do you think about alcohol and/or drinking? Have you ever stopped to count? Maybe you should. This answer alone will tell you something.

Learn to listen to your intuition rather than to the idea that having a drink is a good one.

Have you ever noticed that little voice that pops into your head with ideas about doing something other than drinking? Does it slip ideas into your brain like – go read a book – or – go take a walk – that you immediately dismiss because you’d rather drink instead?

That’s where you begin to address the issue. Right there. That little internal THING that speaks to you so quietly. The thing that pops tiny suggestions into your head – suggestions so small they’re nearly imperceptible sometimes – that’s what you want to start developing a relationship with. Get to know THAT THING. It’ll never do you wrong.

Start listening to yourself. If you find yourself asking if your drinking habits indicate a problem with alcohol – you probably already have one. Otherwise – you wouldnt’t have asked in the first place.
